Covid 19 is just one of the many issues the world is grappling at present. Climate change has become a serious threat, wreaking havoc in many countries across the globe. From incessant floods to cyclones, tornados and earthquakes, the last month or so was full of calamities – a wakeup call for the entire world.

To name some of the worst natural disasters and extreme weather conditions reported recently, Yaas cyclone’s disastrous effect on India, Bangladesh and Indonesia, Pakistan Floods, Mexico floods, wildfires in US, eruption of major earthquakes around the world and Sri Lanka too is in the midst of monsoon rains, resulting in flooding and landslides. These disasters sum up the ongoing situation of the world, adding more woes to the rattled countries like India.

To make matters worse, the sunken X-Press Pearl ship carrying 25Tons of nitric acid and chemicals has already caused a considerable damage to the coastline, corals and life below water. Whether or not an irresponsible act of authorities, the toll is on the environment we depend on and the damage is irreplaceable.

If the ship’s incident is one of the many irresponsible acts, which could be avoided by taking precautionary measures, how can we guarantee that similar incidents will not happen in the future? Is there any assurance that bio-diversity and ecosystems are in safe hands? It is high time that we learn a lesson from this unfortunate incident and make sure that, no such disastrous event will happen at the expense of human intervention.

The natural ecosystems are destroyed at an alarming pace due to urbanization and other human activities such as deforestation, environment pollution etc. One could argue that the recent natural disasters are a reply to human actions against the environment. All humans are responsible for taking care of the environment they live in, but unfortunately the forest cover continues to decrease reflecting on the other side of the things. If we were waiting for any alarm to preserve the environment, the recent natural disasters have proved that it is just about that time, we take necessary action.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁?

It is no surprise that the recent natural disasters have triggered the need to focus on more environment protection while the question arises whether it is too late. Nevertheless, it is of prime importance to protect the existing bio-diversity and ecosystems for the survival of future generations. To this effect, raising awareness on environment protection and the adverse effects caused by environment pollution play a vital role in inculcating the practice of preserving bio-diversity. The usual tree planting projects and volunteering projects to clean up natural surroundings such as beaches can be reinforced to initiate from the grassroots level. It is in the capacity of everyone to contribute in protecting the environment by being cautious of the surroundings. Responsible disposal of plastic can be practiced by everyone, so that we all can contribute to a plastic-free environment.

Today, the entire world is troubled by natural disasters. Isn’t it the time to reimagine, recreate and restore the environment? So that we will be able to see a certain control of climate change and extreme weather conditions.
